PisticciProvince of Matera, Region Basilicata, Italy
The small town rises among the clay hills between the valleys of the Basento and Cavone rivers, and has peculiar, white houses with pointed facades.
In the course of the centuries, the original settlement was repeatedly hit by ruinous landslides, one of which in 1688 claimed over 400 lives, and most of the population moved down in the valley. The discovery of natural gas in the 1960's brought about a remarkable industrial development and population growth.
