The Locality: The small town rises among the clay hills between the valleys of the Basento and Cavone rivers, and has peculiar, white houses with pointed facades. In the course of the centuries, the original settlement was repeatedly hit by ruinous landslides, one of which in 1688 claimed over 400 lives, and most of the population moved down in the valley. The discovery of natural gas in the 1960's brought about a remarkable industrial development and population growth.

WHAT TO SEE
In the Torrevecchia quarter, the church of Saints Pietro and Paolo, built in 1542 a previous 13th century church, whose original bell tower is still standing; inside the church are fine 18th century wood-carved altars
The ruins of a tower and castle (the Torre Bruni), built by the Normans in 1035 as a check-point on the whole Basento valley, with a fine view of the Jonian sea and the Pollino mountain group
The seaside center of Marina di Pisticci, with the two fine beeches of San Teodoro and San Basilio
