HISTORY: The area was already inhabited in the Iron Age, and excavations in the San Pasquale district have revealed the existing of burials of the Bronze Age (9th century BC) of the town.

In the early Middle Ages it was a fortified borough of the Lombards and later an important stronghold under the Byzantine rulers; then from 1309 until the suppression of the feudal system in 1808 it was a fiefdom of the Sanseverino family.
