Candidoni (RC)

Region Calabria, Italy

North of the Gioia Tauro plain, at the foot of the Serre mountains, Candidoni rises along the border of the provinces of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia, offering a splendid view of the Tyrrhenian sea, and on the valleys of the Mesima, Metramo and Petrace rivers.

The economy is mainly agricultural with the production of olive oil, citrus, dairy and forest exploitation.

History

The name is derived, according to the tradition, from Kandidus, a noble Greek warrior, who escaping from the Lombard and Saracen invasion of nearby Medma, took refuge in the area. It is mentioned as belonging to the Candid Giovanni belonged to the great Giustiziere of Calabria Giovanni Candida, then passed in the centuries under many feudal lords and finally belonged to the Pignatelli lords of Borrello until 1806. The earthquake of 1783 wiped away Borrello and seriously damaged also Candidoni.
