Sant'Alessio in Aspromonte (RC)

This small town at the foot of the Aspromonte massif was severely damaged in the 1783 earthquake, that took a heavy toll of victims. It was founded at the time of the sea raids of Saracen pirates by the citizens of nearby Calanna in search of a safer place. It was included in the fiefdom of Calanna until 1806, when it was recognized as a municipality (commune) in its own right. The economy was based on agriculture and silkworm breeding.
