History
There are traces of the ancient Roman setlement of Abellinum in the area of the "Civita", abandoned in the 7th century AD when the population moved to a safer, higher area in the hill called "Castello", around the ancient church of Sant'Ippolisto. In the Middle Ages there were along the river watermills, iron, wool and paper factories, which made it a prosperous trade center. Its feudal lords were the Capece, then the Orsini, and finally the Caracciolo from 1564 to the abolition of the feudal system in 1806.
