Baiano

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

Baiano is an agricultural, commercial and industrial centre, rising at the foot of the Partenio Mountain. Its name derives from praedium Vallejanum (Villa of Valleo) or from praedium Badianum (Villa of Badio), then transformed into Vallejanum, Bajetaum and Baianum. During the civil war the village was conquered by Silla and assigned to the 47th Roman Legion (82 B.C.)

In 79 BC it was sacked by Spartaco's soldiers. After the Fall of the Roman Empire, Baiano suffered several barbaric invasions. In 589 AD it become part of the Duchy of Benevento while in 1075 it joined the Norman Princedom. It was fiefdom of the Orsini Family in 1605 and then belonged to the Baron of Avella, Giovanni Andrea Doria. The territory of Baiano become autonomous at the beginning of the 18th century. Later was head of a district and in 1860 was added to the Irpina Province.

WHAT TO SEE
  • Church of S. Stefano: According to the documents of the Diocesis Archive, the church was a parish already in 1586. The present building is the product of restorations of the last two centuries.
  • Church of Santa Croce, dating back to the early 15th century. The only original element is the late-gothic facade and its portal.
  • Church of SS. Apostoli, dedicated to Apostles Filippo and Giacomo. It was built during the Renaissance and modified in the late baroque style
  • Church and Hermitage of Gesł and Maria: The old Chapel of Gesł and Maria is located on the top of a hill that overviews Baiano. It s the most beloved place for the inhabitants of the town
  • Boccieri Palace , dating back to the 14th century. Inside a famous staircase of a Neapolitan architect Vanvitelli
  • Church of Fontana Vecchia Built in 1660, the country church of Fontana Vecchia is situated in the outskirts, in a square where a hundred year old oak tree stands.
