Capriglia Irpina

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

The name of the town probably comes from "capra" (in english "goat") because the area was once used as pastures. The church of St. Nicola of Bari was built in the year 900. Fifty years later the Guerriero family, lords of the town, went to live in the new castle, today known as the Carafa Castle.

HISTORY: The first lord was Giovandotto, nephew of the King of Sicily, to whom the Capriglia territory belonged. In 1075 Giovandotto sold his property to the de Fragneto family. In 1171 Ruggero de Fragneto unified Capriglia with Sant'Angelo a Scala, then in 1419 the town passed to the Caracciolo family. Some years afterwards Capriglia, with the barony of Sant'Angelo a Scala, was occupied by the Carafa family as Isabella Caracciolo's dowry, when she married the Count of Maddaloni. The Carafas, a very powerful, noble family, used the Capriglia Castle as their summer residence.
