Carife, Campania, Italy

Carife belonged to the Vico Barony and has very ancient origins; recently archeological ruins were found that testify the presence of man in this area since 3000 BC. From that time Carife was always very important in the Ufita Valley. The territory was occupied by Apulians, Etruscans, Greeks, Lucani and Romans.

In 849 it was included by the Lombards in the Duchy of Benevento. In the 11th century Gradilone, nephew of Roberto il Guiscardo, was its Lord. In 1269 Charles of Anjou gave it to the Del Balzo family. In 1507 it became a fiefdom of Consalvo de Cordova, then belonged to the Como, Galeota, Brayda, Miroballo and in 1646, to the Capobianco family from Benevento. Laura Ciaccio Cosentina, widow of Capobianco, bought the marquisdom of Carife, and her descendants owned it until 1810.
