HISTORY:
According to important archeological findings, the territory of Cassano Irpino was already inhabited in Roman times. With the Lombards the town maintained its importance, as shown by the ruins of the powerful Castle, that was in the following centuries transformed and enlarged. The castle became the residence of the feudal lords and around it the first medieval center rose. In 1445, under King Alphonse of Aragona, the fiefdoms of Montella, Bagnoli Irpino and Cassano Irpino were included in one Barony and this castle became the Baron's Palace. During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries the town was under the Giacinto family. Then at the time of the Italian Risorgimento many of the citizens took part to Carbonari riots.
WHAT TO SEE
Medieval Castle - The fortress, already in existence at the time of the Norman domination, was restored during the 16th century and transformed into the rich residence of the Cavaniglia lords.
Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie - The church, semi-destroyed by the 1980 earthquake, was built in 1550. The façade has a rich portal with square tuff blocks. Inside 1500 frescoes, a 1600 triptych and a very ancient crypt.
Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo - Built in the 16th century, the church was completely restored during the 18th century.
