Gesualdo

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

The town rises on some hills in a valley along the right side of the river Fredano Valley. The ancient village was founded during the Lombard domination, though many archeological remains point to a much older origin. In the Middle Ages it was property of the Gesualdo family. Destroyed by Ferdinand of Aragona, it suffered a terrible earthquake in 1694 and was sacked by the French in 1799. A very special event is the Volo dell'Angelo (flight of the angel) dedicated to Saint Vincent Ferrari, on the last Sunday of August.
