Marzano di NolaProvince of Avellino, Region Campania, ItalyThe town rises on the slopes of Mount Visciano, on the borders between Irpinia and Naples. Agriculture is the main resource, thanks to the very fertile land, with a great quantity of grains, tomatoes and fruit, whose excellent quality is recognized all over the world (as for the sanmarzano tomato strain taking its name from the place). The origin of the word Marzano comes from the feudal lord Pandolfo da Marezzano; the ruins of a medieval tower are still visible, Turris Martiani, the dwelling of its rich owner. In the Middle Ages the town was part of the Lauro fiefdom, and a possession of the Orsini family and later of the Sanseverino, Pignatelli and, from 1638, of the Lancellotti that ruled it until 1806, when the feudal system was abolished.
