Montaguto (Mons Acutus) is named after the sharp form of its territory, being situated at the top of a steep mountain. The houses are situated along the roads, perfectly parallel to the Cervaro river. the first mention of the center goes back to the 10th century, when in a document of AD 922, at the time of the Norman conquest, the town was donated to Giovanni V, the bishop of Bovino. The plague of 1658 made many victims but in 1700 Pinto y Mendoza, prince of Spain, had it restored. The fiefdom belonged later to Cristina Spinelli, the princess of Cariati, but only to return to the Pinto family. Sheep farming is one of the main activities as well as the cultivation of wheat. Well known are also its sausages, and excellent quality honey.
