HISTORY: There are mentions of this center since 979 AD. During the Anjou period it was owned by the Montfort family. Guido de Montfort lived in this beautiful place, but in 1270 he killed at Viterbo, in the Chiesa del Gesù, Henry, son of king Richard of England.

Therefore king Charles of Anjou confiscated all the Montfort possessions and gave them to the Orsini family, the last earls of Nola, who also lost everything after their rebellion to Charles V. In 1799 the French used Monteforte as a basis for the wars of Mercogliano and Avellino. During the 19th century it was a center of the Carbonarit Movement of Nola against the Bourbons. Niccolò da Monteforte, a famous woodcarvig artist, was born here.
