Montefredane

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

The origin of this town is medieval, as shown by the feudal castle, built in the 10th century. In the 12th century it was part of the Avellino countdom. It was fiefdom of the noble families of Del Tufo, Capece, Brancaccio and the Caracciolo of Avellino who governed from 1650 to 1806. In 1656 the population was hit by a terrible plague and only many years later a rebirth took place. The territory is rich of woods and mineral springs. It is also known for cattle-breeding and dairy products. Famous people were born in Montefredane, such as historian Guglielmo Giordano, priest Michele Bergamasco, poet Oreste Giordano and writer Berardino de Crescenzo.
