The origins of the town are uncertain but it already existed during Lombard times. Eight small hamlets are part of Montoro Inferiore: Piano (the chief town), Preturo, Piazza di Pandola, Misciano, S. Felice and San Bartolomeo. Montoro was a strategic point along the road that from Irpinia and Sannio led to Salerno.
