Nusco

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

During the 11th century Nusco acquired the title of "civitas" (city) because it was the seat of a Duke or a bishop residence. The first bishop was S. Amato who was born here, he died in 1094 and is the patron of the town. In the Middle Ages it was an important fortress, and its lords in the course of the centuries were the de Tivilla, d'Aquino, de Gianvilla and Imperiale families. The story of the town is however more directly connected to the presence of the bishops than to its feudal lords.
