Roccabascerana

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

The origins of Roccabascerana go back to the Lombard times when it was called Guasciarana. In 971 it was a fiefdom of the bishop of Benevento; in 1225 it was part of the abbey of Montevergine; the last lord was Giuseppe Leonessa. In 1634 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake. In 1660 a plague epidemic decimated the population. Tourists appreciate pottery works as well as the pure air and breathtaking views that the surrounding Mount Brecciato , the Selva Renna and the streams (Serretelle and Bascerano) offer. In the nearby hamlet of Cassano Caudino you can encounter precious churches like the Cappella di Nostra Signora di Lourdes and the church of S. Andrea (19th century).
