The town rises in the Ansando valley. It is of very old origins, since already Latin poet Virgil wrote about an Italic sanctuary dedicated to goddess Avernalis Iuno Mefitides in this place. Near the lake, which was once considered the door to hell because of its poisonous vapors, the remains of a temple dedicated to Juno Mefitides were found; it seems that animals were sacrificed and statues presented o the goddess against the perils of hell. All these findings are now in the Museo Irpino, Avellino.. Experts often study the strange phenomenon. The present name comes from a Lombard fort (Rocca), which a document mentions as already existing in 1133 as, recently restored, which was near a church dedicated to San Felice.
