San Martino Valle Caudina

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

Situated on the slopes of the Pittona Mount, on the edge of the Caudina Valley, in 320 B.C. this village was theatre of battles between Sannites and Romans, as showm by various archaeological findings. In a strategic position guarding the Caudina Valley, this fortified center was a fiefdom of the Capece and D'Aquino, then passed to the Della Leonessa, whose descendants still keep the title of Dukes. The territory of S. Martino Valle Caudina is very fertile below the village while above, to the north, there are luxuriant chestnut and beech woods. Famous festivals are held in honor of S.Equizio and S.Palerio (first Sunday in May); the festival of Our Lady of Peace (end of August); the Sammartinese Summer (beginning of August).
