There was probably a Roman settlement in the area, since the remains of a Roman bridge can be seen in the neighbourhood, but the first mention of the village date back to the year 1299, when it was a hamlet of Vico. Afterwards it was property of the Del Balzo Orsini and De Loffredo families. San Sossio was a brigands' land: already at the time of Giovanna I D'Angiò there is mention of army fighting against bands of highwaymen. The historic center was destroyed several times by earthquakes, but still a few but interesting architectural monuments are today preserved.

the Parish Church, in the Gothic style
the Stone Fountain, which dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century. Worth visiting
the recently restored Sanctuary of S. Michele Arcangelo, located in Montemauro and the destination of large numbers of pilgrims during the year.
