San Sossio Baronia

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

There was probably a Roman settlement in the area, since the remains of a Roman bridge can be seen in the neighbourhood, but the first mention of the village date back to the year 1299, when it was a hamlet of Vico. Afterwards it was property of the Del Balzo Orsini and De Loffredo families. San Sossio was a brigands' land: already at the time of Giovanna I D'Angiņ there is mention of army fighting against bands of highwaymen. The historic center was destroyed several times by earthquakes, but still a few but interesting architectural monuments are today preserved.
