Sant'Andrea di Conza

Province of Avellino, Region Campania, Italy

The first certain historical mention of this village go back to 1161, when it was mentioned among the possessions of count Gionata Balvano. The village was later governed by archbishops as feudal lords, who set their seat in a sixteenth-century fortified building, a circular tower known as Episcopio, where the townhall office is today. The village is well known for the great craftsmanship of its artisans, especially in the manufacturing of wrought iron, stone carving and embroidery. Beautiful festivals are the Incoronata (last Saturday in April), the Madonna del Carmine (16th July), S. Andrea (20th August), S. Emiddio (30th August), the Procession of the Misteries (Holy Week), and the rite of the Maggiaiole (last Saturday in May) when the unmarried girls, dressed in white with a white veil full of grapes, go to the "Gaggia" sanctuary.
