Located in the south-west area of Ischia, the territory of the commune covers about 12 sqkm and comprises a number of ancient agricultural hamlets set among the hills, each of them having their own history and traditions. Thanks to the wealth of spa facilieties and natural resources, from a peasant Barano has become today a tourist and cultural destination.

History: The area was first settled by the Greeks, who had a Nymphaeum here. In Roman times Barano was already a renowned spa resort.

What to see:

  • the Church of St. John the Baptist, one of the most ancient on the island.
  • the Saracen Tower, in the hamlet of Testaccio, built in the 15th century
  • the Windmills in Montebarano
  • the Fiaiano pinewood, the largest on Ischia
  • the beach dei Maronti is the largest beach on Ischia, about 3 Km long, with hills at its back protecting it from Northern winds; from the beach into the hinterland depart the canyons called "cave", leading to natural thermal springs; on the beach are also the "fumarole", hollows releasing high-temperature vapours. In one of the canyons is the major thermal spring on Ischia, the "Sorgente della Cava Scura", where baths and seats were excavated in the course of centuries all around the tufa rock walls
  • the Pilastri, ruins of the medieval aqueduct made with lava stones

  • on Easter Monday, in contrada Buonopane the folk dance called 'Ndrezzata, where dancers mime a duel armed with wooden swords and clubs called "mazzarielli"
