In the following centuries the population increased concentrating along the coast in six villages: Ischia, the largest, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Barano and Serrara Fontana. In the early 17th century the "Pio Monte della Misericordia" of Naples, an organization of enlightened aristocrats with humanitarian aims, established in Casamicciola a large spa establishement for the poor of Naples. in the following centuries the place became a spa resort for people from all over Europe. On July 28, 1883 Shocks triggered by former volcano Epomeo destroyed 1,200 houses at Casamicciola claiming about 2,000 victims, a large part of the population (4217 imhabitants were recorded in the 1881 census). The town was rebuilt closer to the sea, along the marina.
