Meta di Sorrento

Meta - more often known as Meta di Sorrento, rises on terraced hills between the two mountains of Sant'Angelo and Crocione in the Sorrentine Peninsula, separated through the Camaldoli mountains from Vico Equense and through the Lavinola stram from Piano di Sorrento. The territory is intensively cultivated with olive trees, grapevines, orange and lemon trees, and the harbor settlement was originally a mariner village where many sea captains lived. The name Meta derives from a stone positioned on the Roman roads to indicate the distance in miles from Rome. It has been an independent municipality since 1819.

WHAT TO SEE
The Giardino degli Agrumi, an open-air mansion with astounding views on the sea and the mountains, a wonderfully designed green area with orchard, fruit trees, a small forested area, green pavilion, aromatic herbs.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Lauro, built in 1206 on the spot of a previous temple dedicated to goddess Juno, where a woman from the place found a statue of the Virgin Mary under a laurel tree in the 8th century AD. After many restorations, the cathedral appears with a neoclassical facade and a dome covered with majolica tiles, and is a great example of the Neapolitan Baroque style. For the rich and precious worls of art that are hosted inside, the church was declared a Monument of the Italian State in 1913.
