Acerno, Region Campania, Italy

Acerno lies in the heart of the Picentini, the most important mountain range in the Apennines of Campania, a territory rich in forests. The origins of the name are uncertain. Some maintain that it comes from the Latin verb "cerno", with a negative suffix "a", which would mean "hidden". For others, the name may derive from the Latin "acernus", an adjective from "acer", which means maple tree, which is abundant throughout the area.

History

The origins of Acerno can be traced back to the time of the Punic wars, when the Picentini supported Hannibal against Rome, for which they were later punished by the Romans. At the fall of the Roman Empire there followed a period of decline with the first invasion of the Saracens, then the coming of the Lombards, and finally the conquest of the Normans. The Normans created a centralized state, even if divided into fiefs, based on the privilege, with authority and power exercised despotically. The Bourbons tried to revitalize the centers of the hinterland and introduced modern administrative structures. With the unification of Italy in 1860 things did not improve, rather, the century-old injustuce became more apparent and ubearable.
