Loiano lies in the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and is connected by Highway SS 65 to Bologna, 35 km (22 miles) to the North, and Florence, 73 km (45 miles) to the South. It is the site of the astronomical observatory of the University of Bologna, named for the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini.
