Cormons

Province of Gorizia, Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Friaul), Italy

The main economic and cultural center of the Collio area, Cormons is rich of monuments of the Habsburg domination. It is situated at the foot of the Quarin mount, near the remains of a Roman settlement and a medieval castle destroyed by the Venetians in the 16th century.

HISTORY: It was contended between the patriarchs of Aquileia and the counts of Gorizia, who finally obtained the place in the late 13th century. Until WWI it was included in the Austro-hungarian empire, and from 1866 to 1915 was a frontier place with the reign of Italy.

  • The Piazza della Libertà, with a bronze monument to Maximilian Augsburg, the work of viennese Edmund Hofman in 1903.

  • the Cathedral of Sant'Adalberto, reconstructed between 1736 and 1770 in the heart of the medieval center, with a scenographic flight of steps.
