What to see Abruzzo L'Aquila Fountain of 99 Spouts The church of San Vito
The church of San VitoL'Aquila (AQ), Abruzzo, Italy
|
The small Romanesque church of San Vito is opposite the entrance of the fountain, was built in the same period, and contains elements of great inerest. Inside it was renovated in the Baroque style in later centuries, but part of the original ceiling, the portal and elements in the facade show parallels with the most mysterious elements of the fountain.
On the top sides of the facade are 2 sun-dials, the one to the left for the afternoon hours.

In the right dial there are symbols of the Zodiac - Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn - corresponding to the equinoces and sltices, that probably should have helped in establishing the season. Below the dial to the right, in the ancient ruined stone appear traces of red circles. In the pavement of the small square separating the church from the fountain is a huge triangular stone. No historical data are available to establish a date for all the elements of the church, though the facade and portal date to the mid-late 13th century, just like the Fountain.
