Return to the history of the Fountain of the 99 Spouts (Fontana delle 99 Cannelle)

The white stone with a small "templar" cross is situated on the 7th row from the bottom, that is on the central row of the checked-pattern wall, consisting of total 13 rows. In the image below, counting 7 rows from the bottom, the cross is carved in the 6th stone from the left. It is impossible to say if the carved symbol is as old as the fountain without specialistic examination. Certainly it is in a position which is very impossible to reach without stairs or ropes, and is so difficult to distinguish and weather-ruined that might well be an original element.
