Torre NormannaSan Mauro Forte (MT), Basilicata, Italy |
| HISTORY: The origin of the castle goes back to the 11th century, when on the tuff rocks on which the settlement now rises there was a Benedictine abbey under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Tricarico, and a baron, vassal of the count of Montescaglioso. The baron, besides building his own mansion inthe 11th century, also fortified the whole village, ordering the construction of a three-floor tower on the eastern side of the rock; the tower, today located in the center of the main square of the town, was for century reproduced as a symbol of the place and in the coats of arms of many families. |
