Castello Estense - Ferrara, Emilia Romagna

Castello Estense

Ferrara (FE), Emilia Romagna, Italy

HISTORY: The construction of this imposing fortress was ordered in 1385 by Nicoḷ II d'Este as a defense not only against foreign attacks but above all against the local population that had shown their discontent with the Este rule. The architect was Bartolino from Novara; the new building was attached to the ancient Torre dei Leoni, to be surrounded by four towers in the corners connected through high walls. For a century the castle was mainly a military stronghold, then from 1450 onwards it was turned into a luxurious mansion.
