DESCRIPTION:
Castello di Udine
The earliest fortress was built at the time of the Aquileia bishops in the center of the town. Then in the 16th century on its ruins a majestic building was erected, on a project by architect G. Fontana and Giovanni from Udine. The castle was damaged in the 1976 earthquake and underwent long restoration works.
Presently the castle hosts the Civic Museum and Galleries of Ancient and Modern art. The archeological section is on the ground floor, while a Pinacoteque on the second floor has works of Friulan painters from the 15th to the 18th century, as well as of Venetian painters as Carpaccio, Tiepolo, Ghirlandaio, Caravaggio, and also contains a modern section with Canova, De Pisis, de Chirico. In the centre of the castle is the Salone del Parliamento, with frescoes by G.B. Tiepolo and all around a frame in the ceiling 292 coats of arms of the Venetian governors starting from 1420. A section of the Museum is devoted to prints and drawings of Giovan Battista and his son Giovan Domenico Tiepolo. |
