Landmarks in Lazio

Over 200 castles of enormous historical and artistic importance in a region that is at the heart of culture in the world. With so many castles, almost all kinds of military architecture are represented, especially along the borders to the south, east and north, while all along the Thyrrhenian coast a regular series of sighting towers protected from the pirate raids. In the 15th and 16th century a number of powerful defensifve fortresses arose, as the castles of Ostia Antica and Rocca Sinibalda. And many examples are also inside Rome itself, as the Aventino and the Vatican.
