Ancient town on the border of the Ernici mountains, has an interesting citadel surrounded by polygonal walls, and below them a further wall circle protecting the medieval settlement. The Roman walls extend for 2 km, and have five main doors and many smaller entrances.

What to see:

  • the Acropolis, built by the Romans on top of a hill in the 2nd century BC, with a door to the south whose covering is a 5 mt long monolyth stone.
  • the Piaggie, medieval terraced quarters crossed by narrow, steep stairways and alleys
  • Church of San Francesco in the lower district, with attached monastery.
  • Gottifredo Palace, a Gothic building of the 13th century, mode of a tower-house and two floors with double-lancet windows, which hosts the Civic Museum.
  • Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the main square, rising on an early Christian temple of the 5th century AD, with a facade in the Romanesque-Gothic style, hosting a number of works of art: a wooden statue of the Madonna di Costantinopoli of the 13th century, a fine triptych by Antonio da Alatri (15th century), in the left nave a chapel with a fresco of the Virgin with child.
