province of frosinoneColle San Magno

Province of Frosinone, Lazio (Latium) Region, Italy

In the area there were prehistoric settlements, since ruins of an ancient tomb of the stone age were found, as well as silt and quartz arrowheads. Colle San Magno was founded in the 11th century, when the population of a nearby village, extremely cold and without water, decided to move to a better position. Since that time the Abbey of Montecassino and the town of Aquino fought about jurisdiction on the place. The D'Avalos Marquis owned it from 1504 but later it became a possession of Duke Giacomo Boncompagni. The production of charcoal was a very important income until the early 20th century, thanks to the abundance of leech woods, and asphalt mines were also present. Nowadays Colle San Magno has a celebrated production of truffles, typical products of the territory.
