In an enchanting position, with a wide view of the whole Comino valley, this center was already known in Roman times, when Cicero explained that it was named after the "Silva Gallinaria", a forest just behind the village. For centuries it was a possession of the Montecassino Abbey, later was a fiefdom of the Aquino counts and finally was included in the Kingdom of Naples.
In 1947 a seven-year-old girl Giuseppina Norcia, just before receiving her First Communion told her mother she had seen Child Jesus. In 1974 Giuseppina, by then a widow, started to see Jesus again, this time with Mary, and was asked to build a small church where to keep a miraculously appeared statue of Child Jesus. Since then thousands of pilgrims come to the sanctuary to pray and ask for miracles.
