Province of Rieti, Lazio, Italy

The name of the place derives from the Latin "ad cumulum" meaning on top of a hill, with a clear reference to the spectacular position of the place on top of a green hill, rising where the Pescara stream joins the Tronto, against a background of mountains and pastures.

The village was founded most probably in the 12th century, after the Norman conquest of the area, as a fortress to defend the northernmost border of the Kingdom of Naples. If was a fiefdom of the Anjou and then of the Orsini family.
