The old part of the town rises on a tufa plain between the gorges of two streams flowing into the Treia river, a tributary of the Tiber. On the site in antiquity was the town of Falerii Veteres, the capital of the Falisci people, abandoned since the 3rd century BC. Later on the town of Falerii Novi was built 5 km to the west, but this too was abandoned in the 8th century AD. Civita Castellana was an important citadel and residence of the Church State in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

What to see:

  • The Cathedral, built in 1210, rich in marble mosaics of the Cosma brothers, Jacopo and Lorenzo, with an ancient, early Christian altar and crypt.
  • The Rocca , a fortified castle and residence started by Pope Alexander VI on a project by Giuliano da Sangallo of 1494, has a five-sided plan with corner strongholds, and is a beautiful example of military architecture.
  • "Museo Archeologico dell'Agro Falisco", hosted in the castle, and describing the history of the Treia Valley since the 15th century BC.
  • Town of Falerii Novi, one of the main examples of Roman walls still extant, for a total 2108 mt, with 50 towers and 9 doors. Near the Jupiter door there are the remains of the 12th century church of S. Maria di Falerii.
