Rising on a tufa crest, in an area widely cultivated with olive trees, vineyards and artichokes (the celebrated "carciofi romani"), was in Etruscan times an important maritime power known as Kaisra. The Romans called it Caere Vetus, which gave origin to the present name. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

What to see:

  • Etruscan necropolis, north of the town including tombs from the 7th to the 1st century BC with a great variety of architectural forms.
  • Museo Nazionale Cerete, with a large collection of local and imported vases, urns and items from the sepulchres.
  • The Medieval Castle, built on previous foundations of Etruscan walls of the 4th century BC, today the seat of the National Museum.
