Today a modern seaport town, the main harbor in Latium, was a Roman town with the name of Centumcellae. In the 11th century it was plundered by the Saracens and the population moved to the mountains in the hinterland. Under an oaktree it was decided to come back to the coast as suggested by a mariner and the initial OC (Optimum Consilium) are still in the coat of arms of the town.

What to see:

  • Forte Michelangelo, a fine Renaissance mansion started in 1508 by architect Bramante and completed by Michael Angelo, a rectangular fortress with four towers in the corners and a central light - sided stronghold.
  • Museo Nazionale Archeologico, hosted in the 17th century custom house, containing a rich collection of pieces from the Castellina excavations, the Piscianelli necropolis, the prehistoric settlements of monte Rovello, as will as items found on the bottom of the harbor.
  • The remains of the Roman docks.
  • The Terme Taurine, remains of spas belonging to a Roman Villa of imperial times.
