Bagnoregio

Province of Viterbo, Lazio (Latium) Region, Italy

Situated on the eastern coast of Lake Bolsena on a tufa rock, this was the ancient Balneum Regium of Roman times. It was the birth place of Giovanni Fidanza (b. 1221) who become a philosopher and Saint of the Catholic church as Saint Bonaventura.

What to see:

the Cathedral of San Nicola, built in the late 16th century, preserving, in the third chapel to the right, the Bible and the Holy Arm of St. Bonaventura.

the church of Sant'Agostino, a Gothic church of the 11th century.

2 km (about 1 mile) west, the ancient medieval borough of Civita di Bagnoregio, called "the dying town",. It was founded by Etruscans over 2,500 years ago, has seen its population dwindle to just fifteen residents over the course of the 20th century. The town is noted for its striking position atop a plateau of friable volcanic tufa overlooking the Tiber river valley, in constant danger of destruction as its edges fall off, leaving the buildings built on the plateau to crumble. The city is also much admired for its architecture, some spanning several thousand years. Civita di Bagnoregio owes much of its unaltered condition to its relative isolation: the town was able to withstand most intrusions of modernity as well as the destruction wrought by two world wars.
