Salò

Locality

Salò is a small town on the banks of Lake Garda, founded in the Roman period as Pagus Salodium. In the middle ages it became a stronghold of the Milanese Visconti family. From 1440 the town came under the control of the Republic of Venice. From 1943 to 1945 Salò was the capital of Mussolini's Repubblica Sociale Italiana (Italian Social Republic), also known as the Republic of Salo'.
