History: In pre-historic time there was on the site an important Piceni settlement, renowned for the craftswork of amber, coming from the Baltic area; if was a Roman colony, and in the early Middle Ages Benedictine monks from Farfa built a church, called Santa Maria in Muris, on the Roman ruins and a castle rose on a nearby hill, which was called Belmonte. In 1263 the castle came unde the control of Fermo.
