Situated in the Sibillini Mountains Natural Park, in the upper valley of the Fiastrone river, the commune takes its name from the Fiastra Lake, a jewel amid the mountains, a favourite location for water sports and fishing. The commune is actually a group of small hamlets, with the town hall at Trebbio.

HISTORY:

Already settled in Neolithic times, in the Middle Ages was first under the Magalotti and later the da Varano families; from 1545 it was included in the Church State, to be finally annexed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • the Romanesque church of San Paolo, preserving a multi-coloured wooden group of the 16th century;
  • the church of San Lorenzo al Lago preserving fine 13th-century frescoes;
  • the ruins of the walls and threee towers of the 14th-century Magalotti Castle;
  • the canyon Gole del Fiastrone, among the most spectacular, wild landscapes in the Apennines, where Karst erosion created natural sculptures of astounding beauty;
  • the small mountain church of San Marco in Colpolina;
  • the Santuario Santa Maria di Chiaravalle di Fiastra, in the territory of Tolentino, among the most important examples of Cistercian architecture in Marche, dated to the 12th century AD.
