On the morning of 31 October 2002 an earthquake hit this small town, destroying the elementary school and killing 29 people, 26 of them little children. This tragic event will remain in the history and the heart of the people of Molise forever, as the images of the long procession of small white coffins carried up the hill to the little cemetery will never disappear from the sight.

In the middle of a landscape of hills covered by olive trees, San Giuliano lies near to the Occhito lake.
In the 10th century Landolfo and Pandolfo, the Lombard princes of Benevento, founded here an abbey to Sant'Elena, which was later donated to the Benedictines, who farmed the surrounding territories attracting peasant families to settle near he monastery, in an area where later also a fortress was built, that in later centuries was a fiefdom of the Counts of Loritello, the Counts of Molise, the Sanframondo and finally the Montalto and Orefici families.
