Province of Isernia, Molise region, Italy

Pretty town in a wonderful position on a hill to the left of the Verrino river, surrounded by green woods. There are remains of a pre-Roman settlement (walls below the hill). In the Middle Ages it was a flourishing crafstwork center, renowned especially for bell-making, the Fonderia Pontificia Marinelli made bronze bells to be shipped all over Europe. Also goldsmiths and watch makers were especially renowned. Among its many feudal Lords were the Di Capua, Colonna, Gonzaga, D'Aquino and Caracciolo families. Especially lively is the "Carnevale Agnonese" and on Christmas Eve the beautiful parade of the "n'docce", wooden torches made in the nine different quarters ("borgate") accompanied by the sound of bagpipes, to the Piazza Plebiscito where a brotherhood bonfire is lit.

WHAT TO SEE

Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, with a Romanesque portal and a 17th century belltower, and on the vault inside a giant fresco by Francesco Palumbo.

Church of Sant'Emidio, with a 12th century portal and rich works of art . Behind the altar there are wooden painted statues that are taken out on Good Thursday and Friday for a re-enactement of the Last Supper.

Corso Garibaldi, sided by ancient houses with stone lions near the doors (the lion is the coat of arms of Agnone), ancient artisans' workshops, house Apollonio and house Nuonno.

Church of San Francesco, with a giant round window over the portal, dated 1330. Inside, the Final Judgment on the vault by Gambora.

Church of San Marco, with a large Renaissance portal embellished by a copper lion. Founded in the 11th century by Odorisio and Gualtiero of Borrello, who introduced the cult of Saint Mark the Gospel writer and took with them families from Venice who used to decorate their homes with Saint Mark's lion. Great work of art inside: rich altars, the 3rd on the right with a painting of a Sacra Famiglia and Santi, by Luca Giordano; a precious obstensory in gilded copper and enamel, by Giovanni from Agnone, a disciple of Nicola from Guardiagrele.
