Isernia in Molise

Conca Casale

Province of Isernia, Molise region, Italy

Originally called Valle del Campo, this small center was from 1811 to 1911 a frazione of Pozzilli, and later of Venafro, until 1927 when it became an independent municipality joining the three centers of Vicinato, Crognalito and Casamascio. Until 1952, when the road was finally made, it could only be reached with mules along the ancient tratturo Venafro-Campaglione-Monte Corno. A massive emigration took place between 1881 and 1921, when the population, also because of the war, was reduced to half. Another great blow was the 1984 earthquake. The present hopes of a rebirth are mainly based on tourism.
