Venafro

A well-known Samnite and then Roman town, thanks to its key position on the border with Campania, Abruzzo and Lazio was always a center were trades, cultures and arts could meet and exchange experiences. After the fall of the Roman empire, it became part of the Lombard dukedom of Benevento, to pass later to the countdom of Molise. Under the Pandone family Venafro was a center of great importance, then it passed to Filiberto Challons, to Cardinal Pompeo Colonna, and finally to the Caracciolo.

The town is rich of archeological remains, such as the amphitheater, right in the center, over which houses were built in the course of time, and a great number of other items partly collected in the Museo Nazionale Archeologico

WHAT TO SEE

The Pandone Castle Built in the 10th century AD in the form of an enclosure, with a tower at top and entrance on the Eastern side, the castle was meant to offer shelter to the population in case of invasions. Destroyed in the 1349 earthquake, it was rebuilt with 3 more round towers; then in the 16th century the Pandone family purchased Venafro and changed the castle into a Renaissance palace, with huge dancing salons and fine gardens.

The Monastery of San Nicandro, where San Pio da Pietrelcina stayed is a very troubled period of his life, where objects used by the Capucine are kept.
