Baranello, Province Campobasso, Molise, Italy

The name was already mentioned in the 11th century, and probably derives from Vairanum, a Samnite town whose ruins can still be seen on nearby Mount Vairano. Giuseppe Zurlo, a renowned economist and a minister in the Kingdom of Naples, was born here in 1757.

What to see

The Museo Civico, in the Townhall palace, hosts a large collection donated by architect Giuseppe Barone in 1896, among them Roman stones with inscriptions and fragments of frescoes from Pompei; a rich pinacoteque with paintings by Arcangelo Ciampoli (late 19th century), Francesco Fracanzani and Luca Giordano; the "Bosco di Fronatine Bleu" by Giuseppe Palizzi, and other pictures by Neapolitan and Flemish artists; in another chamber, ceramic pieces of many origins, Murano and Bohemia glasswork.
