Jelsi, Province Campobasso, Molise, Italy

This lively center is formed of an ancient and a newer part and rises on a rock over the Carapello stream. In the vicinity rose the ancient Samnite town of Romulea, as shown by archeological excavations of tombs and the presence of an Italic temple dating back to the 4th century BC. Called Gittia under the Lombards (7th century) the name had become Gelzi or Gilizza in the 17th century. The first feudal lord was Bertrando from Belmonte in 1269, later on the fiefdom passed to the Carafa family.

What to see

Palace of Duke Carafa, bulit in 1517 on the remains of an ancient medieval Castle.
Church of Sant'Andrea, rebuilt after the 1805 earthquake.
Casa D'Amico, on whose facade ia an ancient lowrelief and a Roman tombstone in honor of Caius Neratius.
Voliante Castle, in the highest point of the small town, built in 1807, furnitured in the style of the Napoleonic Empire.
Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a little away from the place, founded in the 14th century by Franciscan Friars.
Remains of Romulea, ancient Samnite town, with very interesting underground tombs.
Remains of a wooden Italic Temple, in the area called "Cupa", midway between Jelsi and Gildone.
